Many members of the Herpesvirus family have been implicated as causative agents in CFS. For many years the ubiquitous Epstein-Barr virus, present in 90% of the population, was the principal suspect.

Other viruses implicated include cytomegalovirus, and human herpesvirus type-6 HHV-6. More recently, however, similarities to post-polio syndrome have led to a reexamination of the viral link.
